Bleomycin can interact with membranes affecting the lipid integrity

The anticancer drug bleomycin can interact with membranes affecting the lipid integrity.This was assayed both in liposome models and in cultured cells, proving for the first time that the MUFA and PUFA residues of membrane phospholipids react with sulfur-centered radicals generated by drug-thiol complexes. The participation of membranes to the drug toxicity is a promising synergy that can be developed with other DNA-damaging anticancer drugs.
